If your child is 5 years old on or before August 15, 2026, you will register for Kindergarten.

How to register for Kindergarten

·  Go to your child's zoned school on the date listed above.

·  You will need to bring the following documents: a certified birth certificate (not mother's copy), a recent physical, and an up-to-date shot record – if you do not have all documents, you still need to register your child.

·  If your child is currently enrolled in Head Start or Pre-K, you do not need to register your child for Kindergarten.

If you cannot attend on the date listed above, you can always register at your child’s zoned school at any time.

Open Enrollment Period

State law requires all children to attend the school in their zone. If you want your child to attend a school outside of your zone, you must pick up an application at Central Office beginning on June 1st. All applications can be turned in beginning July 1st- July 31st; applications will not be accepted before July 1st

On June 1st, the application and the number of open seats for each grade will be posted on the Johnson County Schools website, www.jocoed.net. A reasonable number of seats must be reserved for families who move into that zone or who have a parent/guardian employed at the school. All other seats will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have any questions about open enrollment, call Angie Wills at 727-2640.

If your child is 3 or 4 years old on or before August 15, 2026, you will register for Head Start / Pre-K.

How to register for Head Start and Pre-K

·  If your child is currently enrolled in Head Start or Pre-K, you do not need to register your child again.

·  Go to your child's zoned school on the date listed above.

·  You will need to bring the following documents: a certified birth certificate (not mother's copy), a recent physical (with lead test after 2 years old), an up-to-date shot record, proof of income, and housing expenses (mortgage/rent, sewer, water, natural gas, homeowners/renters insurance)

If you do not have all the documents, you will still need to register your child; however, they will be placed on a waitlist until we receive the required documents.

If you cannot attend on the date listed above, you may also register online at www.jocoed.net by clicking Departments, then Head Start, to access the online application. If you have had a child previously enrolled in Head Start/PreK, you will need to call Nikki Porter to register your child.

Acceptance letters will be mailed to eligible children in July. Please ensure your application is complete by this time.

If you want your Head Start/Pre-K child to attend a school other than their zoned school, those seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, only after students zoned for that area are enrolled.

If you send your child to a school outside their zone, you are not automatically guaranteed a seat at the same school for Kindergarten. You will have to follow the Open Enrollment procedures listed above.

If you have any questions, please call Nikki Porter at 423-727-2640

Open Enrollment for the 2025-2026 School Year

Open Enrollment for the 2025-2026 School Year

State law now requires us to post the number of spaces available in each school by grade for the District’s open enrollment period. A reasonable number of seats must first be reserved for students who move into that school zone and students who have a parent/guardian employed at that school. During this time, a parent/guardian may request that his/her child attend a school within the district other than the one to which the child is zoned.

Below is the information on the Open Enrollment spaces available at each school by grade level for those students who do not live in that district. The Open Enrollment Period for the 2025-2026 school year will be from 7-1-2025 to 8-1-2025. Applications must be turned into Central Office (211 North Church Street, Mountain City) from 8:00 AM- 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday during this open enrollment period. Slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis, and parents will be notified if accepted or denied. Once accepted, the student shall provide his/her own transportation to and from school. The student must maintain satisfactory attendance, behavior, and effort to remain in the new school. Please contact Angie Wills, Elementary Supervisor, at 423-727-2640 if you have specific questions about this.

FLU Vaccinations Available at Your Child's School

FLU Vaccinations Available at Your Child's School

The Johnson County Health Department and the Johnson County School System have partnered to provide seasonal influenza (flu) vaccinations at your child's school. If your child is uninsured, there is no cost to you for the flu vaccine. If your child is covered by insurance, including TennCare and private insurance, the County Health Department will file a claim with the insurance plan and receive reimbursement directly from the insurance plan . There is no out of pocket cost to you for the flu vaccines provided during this school flu vaccination clinic.

Health Department nurses will vaccinate children and school staff using the injectable (shot) flu vaccine. Clinics will begin as soon as the vaccine arrives at the health department (usually middle to late fall).

If you would like for your child to receive flu vaccine, please complete the following consent form. Be sure to sign the form electronically as this will be your permission for your student to receive the vaccine. You must fill out a separate consent form for each student you would like to receive the vaccine. If at a later date you change your mind and do not wish for your child to receive flu vaccine at the school, please notify the Johnson County Health Department at 423-727-9731 prior to the clinic date. This service to the students and staff is being done to decrease the impact of seasonal flu in our communities and to decrease school absenteeism.

If you have any questions, please call the Johnson County Health Department at 423-727-9731

COVID and School Attendance

COVID and School Attendance

COVID continues to be a concern in our community and schools. There are no current guidelines regarding COVID, and each LEA will determine policy on each individual case. If your child test positive for COVID, please call the school and speak to the School Nurse regarding information for school excuses, for attendance and follow up guidance.

All school employees must use sick leave for all COVID related absences.  All employees must have proof a positive test result in order to avoid requiring a doctor’s note for four or more consecutive days.  This must be attached to the absentee form.
